South African parties condemn US attacks on Iran

by TINTSWALO BALOYI
JOHANNESBURG – SOME South African parties have expressed solidarity with Iran amid military onslaught by Israel and the United States (US).

The US initiated the attacks on Sunday as Iran’s conflict with Israel continued from last week.

Julius Malema, the leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has met Iranian Ambassador to South Africa, Shakib Mehr, and his delegation.

“The EFF stands in firm solidarity with Iran’s right to self-defence in the face of aggression by Apartheid Israel, backed by the USA,” Malema assured.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) also condemned the US’ military attacks on Iran.

“We reiterate our solidarity with the people of Iran and the entire axis of resistance to imperialism, Zionism and its genocidal campaigns in the Middle East,” it stated.

SACP said the attacks by the US on Iran undermine the United Nations (UN), global multilateralism, peace and justice.

“This can only lead to disastrous outcomes, as history has shown in numerous previous situations, and must be stopped with immediate effect,” SACP stated.

Israel’s latest attack on Iran comes as it has been involved in an aggression against Palestine since October 2023.

At least 55 000 people have been killed.

Previously, the African National Congress (ANC), the biggest party in South Africa, has condemned Israel in both wars.
