Ghana armed forces upskilled on cyber security

by RUSSELL ADADEVOH
ACCRA – GHANA is upskilling its uniformed forces on cyber security in an effort to strengthen the West African country’s national security.

The 12-day Defence Management Course (DMC) is ongoing until July 11 at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Otu Barracks in the southeastern town of Teshie.

Participants are officers from Ghana’s security services and officials from some government ministries, departments and agencies.

Samuel Nartey George, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, has presented a lecture titled, “Cybersecurity – Ghana’s Policy and Readiness” at the initiative organised by the Ghana Armed Forces.

“Cybersecurity was the new frontier of national security and defence,” he said.

“All traditional defence mechanisms today rely on secure digital infrastructure.”

The minister however expressed satisfaction at strides made by Ghaa in tackling cyber security.

“Cyber fraud is real, and Ghana has made significant strides in arresting cybercriminals through advanced digital forensics, AI (artificial itelligence) tools and coordinated intelligence sharing,” he said.

George noted Ghana was the highest-ranked on the African continent in cyber security preparedness, according to the latest International Telecommunication Union (ITU) assessment.

Some architecture of Ghana’s cyber security governance framework include a governing board chaired by the minister and composed of key Ministers including Interior, Defence and National Security and a Joint Cybersecurity Committee with members from over 15 key institutions including the judiciary, security agencies and regulatory bodies.

‎The framework prioritises protection of critical information infrastructure sectors such as defence, energy, finance, health and telecommunications.
