Africa’s safari tourism market forecast to surge

by DION HENRICK
CAPE TOWN – THE safari tourism market in Africa is projected to reach US$34,56 billion by 2033.

Recent market research indicates that the industry generated a gross revenue of $18 billion in 2023.

Future Market Insights has made the projections.

“With increasing global interest in eco-tourism and sustainable travel, Africa’s reputation as a premier destination for authentic wildlife safaris continues to strengthen.” it stated.

The expert’s organisation forecast destinations like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia to witness surging demand from international travelers seeking immersive, nature-based experiences.

The market is also experiencing a shift toward high-value, low-impact tourism, where travelers are willing to spend more for exclusive and ethical experiences.

From private luxury safaris in the Serengeti to gorilla trekking adventures in Uganda and Rwanda, the segment is expanding to cater to affluent tourists seeking rare and personalised wildlife encounters.

The growth of the African safari tourism industry is fueled by increased global awareness of the rich biodiversity and Big Five safaris, rising disposable incomes in emerging economies, a shift toward experiential tourism, government initiatives and partnerships promoting Africa’s national parks and wildlife conservation zones and greater accessibility through expanded international flight routes and improved tourism infrastructure.
