Russia to open embassy in South Sudan

KHARTOUM – THE Russian Federation plans to open its embassy in South Sudan either in September or October.

This reflects a deepening of relations between the Eurasian powerhouse and the world’s newest country.

Chol Tong Mayay, South Sudan Ambassador to Russia, has announced the plans as he made farewell to a South Sudanese delegation that left on Tuesday.

The delegation of leaders from the information and communications technology (ICT) that was in Saint Petersburg for the city’s International Economic Forum (SPIEF 25).

Mayay advised and encouraged the government of South Sudan to expand real business with Russia.

“Russia is a country South Sudan can count on,” he said.

The envoy encouraged Russian companies to venture into South Sudan.

Mayay also announced that Russia had increased its scholarships to South Sudan this year, making it 25 scholarships instead of five.

Mayay studied engineering in Russia.

He noted between May and June, the two countries had signed a number of agreements and memorandum of understanding to extract minerals and explore petroleum in South Sudan.

A NilePet delegation is currently in Moscow and a deal is likely with Russian giant petroleum company, Rosneft.
