JOHANNESBURG – MORE charges have been slapped on the son of former Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, and a co-accused following a shooting incident in Johannesburg last week.
Initially, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the deceased’s son, and an alleged accomplice, identified in court as Tobias Mugabe Mutonge, were facing a charge of attempted murder for the shooting of a gardener at the former’s place of residence in Hyde Park.
They made their first appearance at the Alexandra Magistrates Court on Monday, when two more charges – defeating/obstructing the course of justice and possession of a firearm-were added.
The state is opposing bail.
The matter will be heard next Tuesday, March 3.
Between now and the date, investigators must ascertain the status of the accused in the country.
The two appeared calm, both clad in black hooded jackets, on appearance.
The charge of defeating/obstructing the course of justice stems from the fact that the gun that was used in the shooting has since not been found.
It remains a mystery how it disappeared from the crime scene.
Bellarmine Chatunga (29), Mugabe’s youngest son, has a history of violence back in Zimbabwe.
In 2017 in South Africa, he was involved in an incident that led to her mother, Grace, assaulting a model she found in the company of the Mugabe sons.
The former first lady has a pending warrant of arrest for the incident that occurred in Johannesburg.
