Spain rejects US bases as diplomacy tested

by LOUISE MOREAU
PARIS – SPANISH Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Irene Montero has sharply criticised the foreign policies of the United States and Israel, calling them “the real threats to humanity and global security.”

Speaking over the weekend, Montero voiced strong objections to what she described as “unprovoked military actions against Iran,” urging Spain to reconsider its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) membership and emphasising the risks ordinary citizens face as a result of alliance obligations.

“The United States and Israel are currently the main threats to the security and stability of humanity,” Montero said.

“People do not have to pay for illegal invasions. We must prevent and limit the price of energy, food, and basic products right now. Public transportation should be free, and Spain should seriously consider leaving NATO because being allies of the U.S. puts us in danger.”

Montero’s statements have sparked widespread attention on social media, with many commentators echoing her concerns.

Dani Steve commented: “Absolutely, Irene Montero is spot on! With the U.S. escalating conflicts in Iran and Venezuela, it’s high time Spain and the rest of Europe reconsider NATO’s role in dragging us into endless wars. Spain must prioritise peace over alliance with warmongers.”

Bill Mobilized added: “Making enemies out of allies — no one does it better than the Americans,” while Ismael Salamanca said: “Spain will not participate in an illegal war that kills children and civilians.”

Malome Prince observed: “I love how the world is seeing the truth; America and Israel are the monsters of the world,” and Dharmendra Yadav remarked: “Spain remains on the right side of history…”

Other social media users emphasised the importance of questioning powerful alliances.

Fahad Jafri wrote: “I truly appreciate Spain and leaders like #IreneMontero for daring to question powerful alliances. It takes courage to say that people’s food, energy, and dignity matter more than military loyalty. If #NATO claims to stand for peace, it cannot stay silent while conflicts escalate. Security should protect ordinary people — not bind them to wars they never chose.”

Muhammad Kamran Momin expressed concern over broader geopolitical patterns, noting: “First Venezuela, then threats over Greenland, now escalation toward Iran. Now pressure on Spain. This isn’t diplomacy anymore — it’s power politics without restraint. The world is entering a dangerous phase where alliances are tested and sovereignty is openly challenged. History shows one thing: when power replaces diplomacy, global instability follows.”

Mohammed Faiz added: “They are realising slowly who the real threats are, unlike what mainstream media says,” and Abdoulaye Marone questioned: “But what is the difference between the Russian attack on Ukraine and the American approach toward Iran? Why were there sanctions against Russia and not against the U.S.?”

Montero’s criticism highlights a broader debate within Spain and Europe about the role of NATO, alliance obligations, and the consequences of supporting military actions led by the United States and Israel.

Analysts note that such debates are important in democracies, as they raise questions about the balance between security commitments and the protection of citizens’ interests.

Her call for Spain to exit NATO, while controversial, reflects a segment of European opinion increasingly concerned about being drawn into conflicts initiated by powerful allies.

Supporters argue that prioritising diplomacy, human security, and the protection of essential goods is a vital responsibility for any government.

Montero’s statements have reignited discussions about global cooperation, the dangers of unilateral military actions, and the importance of pursuing peace and diplomacy over confrontation.

By questioning alliances and advocating for policies that protect ordinary people, she aims to stimulate debate on whether military commitments should come at the expense of domestic stability and international law.
