LAGOS – AUSTIN ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha is backing South African champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, at the Federation of International Football (FIFA) Club World Cup in the United States.
They are one of four teams from Africa at the tournament, alongside Al Ahly (Egypt), Esperance (Tunisia) and Wydad (Morocco).
“But in really honesty the other three are African Arabs and only one is deep African, Sundowns,” ex-Nigeria star Okocha said.
He believes the whole Black African population and Blacks around the globe are represented by Sundowns.
“We can’t say only South Africans. You can take out the South African population and you wouldn’t notice it. Billions of blacks will be proud of any Sundowns achievement,” he said.
Okocha said other teams from Sub-Saharan Africa can follow Sundowns’ example.
At the 32-team tournament, the South Africans are in Group F with Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Fluminense (Brazil) and Ulsan (South Korea).
The tourney runs from June 14 to July 13.
One of Okocha’s former sides, Paris Saint-Germain (France), recently crowned the champions of Europe, will also be at the tournament.
