Relegation haunts iconic Zimbabwe outfit

by DANAI MWARUMBWA
HARARE – What sounded far-fetched months ago is rapidly turning into reality.

The standing of one of the most famous football sides in Southern Africa as a topflight club hangs in the balance.

Dynamos, Zimbabwe’s most popular side, is edging closer to relegation and with four teams to be demoted from the Castle Lager Premiership, its prospects of survival are dire.

At 15 points, Dembare is running out of games to retain their decades-long status, with 12 rounds left.

With a mere two wins from 18 matches they occupy a deserved second-from -bottom position in the 18-team standings.

For a team of Dynamos’ pedigree, with a record 22 titles, it is an embarrassment they have scored only six goals- the lowest in the topflight- and have goal difference of -7, which is the second-worst.

The iconic side formed in 1963 has been a disaster both on the pitch and the boardroom.

Chairman, Bernard Marriot Lusengo, is resisting pressure to step down.

Dynamos contested the 1998 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League final, eventually losing to ASEC Abidjan of the Ivory Coast.

They have consistently featured in the knockout stages of the CAF continental football top echelons competition.
