LUSAKA – ZAMBIAN police have arrested a top female athlete and another woman over a same-sex video allegedly featuring the two went viral.
Medal-winning sprinter, Rhoda Njovu (31), and Katundu Lumweka (33) were arrested on Thursday after the video emerged earlier this month.
Adding to the controversy around the issue is that Njovu is a police sergeant and Lumweka a Zambia Correctional Service officer.
The Zambia Police Service (ZPS) said the two individuals were apprehended in connection with the production and circulation of obscene material, an offence contrary to the provisions of the Penal Code.
It is alleged they jointly produced an obscene video and shared the same through the WhatsApp messaging platform to one of their contacts.
The duo has been jointly charged and arrested for one count of Production of Obscene Matters or Things Contrary to Section 177(1)(a) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Njovu has been charged with a second count of Circulation of Obscene Matters or Things Contrary to Section 177(1) (b) of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Rae Hamoonga, police spokesman, reminded members of the public that the production, possession, and circulation of obscene material remained a criminal offence under Zambian law.
“Those found wanting will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” he said.
Njovu has won medals at the African Games and African Championships and participated at the Olympics.
