China supports Nigeria cyber crime clampdown

by EMEKA OKONKWO
ABUJA – CHINA has endorsed the clampdown on telecommunications fraud, which has netted its nationals, by the Nigerian government.

The Chinese embassy in the volatile West African country welcomed the measures by the host government.

“Telecommunications and online fraud are issues of global concern,” the embassy stated.

“Tackling such transnational crimes presents a common challenge to governments worldwide.”

The Asian global economic and technology powerhouse pledged cooperation with Nigeria as Africa’s most populous nation battled such cyber-crimes and fraud.

“In line with the consensus reached between the leaders of both countries, China is ready to deepen law enforcement cooperation with Nigeria,” the embassy stated in the capital Abuja.

Recently, the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security of China and the National Anti-Fraud Centre of Nigeria compiled and released the “2025 Edition of the Telecom Network Fraud Prevention Handbook.”

It is based on the latest characteristics of telecommunications network fraud crimes.

The handbook creates an accessible “anti-fraud shield” for Chinese citizens through the form of “real case analysis, telecom fraud routine dismantling and core anti-fraud tips.”

The document details types of high-incidence telecommunications and internet fraud.

They include rebates for fake orders, fake online investment and financial management, fake shopping services, impersonating e-commerce logistics customer service and loan credit investigation.

The handbook also details impersonating leaders and acquaintances, impersonating public security, courts, dating, fake transactions of online game products and ticket refunds and changes.
