MBABANE – ESWATINI is encouraging fellow landlocked developing countries to empower youth with digital skills so as to accelerate sustainable economic growth in these nations.
Eswatini Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo, delivered the message at the ongoing third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) in Awaza, Turkmenistan.
Some 32 LLDCs are meeting until Friday (August 8) to address unique challenges faced by these nations.
Khumalo has addressed a session on, “Driving Growth – Youth-Led Innovation in Digital Development for Sustainable Economies in LLDCs.”
“Our youth are not just future leaders. They are current innovators, problem-solvers, and partners in development, he said.
“As policymakers, we must empower them with the tools, skills, and platforms they need to thrive in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.”
The minister proposed that LLDCs prioritised investment in digital infrastructure and connectivity, address access and affordability issues as well as ensure efficient digital payment systems and seamless currency exchange mechanisms.
He said Eswatini is expanding its fibre optic backbone and rolling out the necessary infrastructure to support cloud computing, smart logistics and e-government services.
“Such investment is critical to narrowing the digital divide and boosting national productivity,” Khumalo said.
“We must ensure that all citizens, especially rural youth, can afford digital tools and access online opportunities.”
On efficient digital payment systems and seamless currency exchange mechanisms, Khumalo explained, “For youth-led enterprises to thrive in LLDCs, cross-border transactions must be secure, cost-effective and interoperable.”
Formerly Swaziland, Eswatini believes landlocked countries, despite geographic limitations, can unleash powerful economic growth through digital innovation.
“The transformative potential of young people in the digital space is evident,” Khumalo said.
