Kenya seeks Germany, ITU partnership in digital roadmap

by MARIA MACHARIA
NAIROBI – KENYA has enlisted the support of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and German Society for International Cooperation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ) to develop a Digital Public Infrastructure (DDI) roadmap for the African country.

Government officials and representatives from the organisations have signed the Letter of Intent (LOI) around cooperation on the roadmap.

It is expected the LOI, signed in Nairobi on Wednesday, will guide the exploration on how to support the development of an interoperable, inclusive, and secure DDI roadmap in Kenya, focusing on digital identity and digital payments.

“Further, it will strengthen institutional and policy frameworks to enable sustainable and scalable DDI vision,” said William Gitau, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy.

He signed on behalf of the ministry.

Christin Schulz-Kaunga, GIZ Head of Digital Transformation in Kenya, signed for the organisation, which is the main development agency of Germany.

Simon Hagemann, Director at the German Embassy, witnessed the signing.

“The partnership will enhance knowledge exchange, capacity building, best practice sharing on DDI and promote public-private partnership,” Gitau added.

This week has been key in the East African country’s digital transformation.

The ICT Authority launched the National Digital Skills Curriculum at the Connected Africa Summit in Diani.

It is an initiative under the Kenya National Digital Masterplan 2022–2032.

This curriculum aims to equip 20 million Kenyans with essential digital competencies, fostering inclusion, innovation, and economic empowerment in the digital economy.

At the same event, the authority launched the “Emerging Trends and Private Sector Opportunities in the Digital Work Ecosystem.”

The report emphasises the transformative potential of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain and Big Data in reshaping various sectors in the continent.
