NAIROBI – KENYA and South Africa are strengthening their cooperation on digital transformation, responsible artificial intelligence (AI) governance and innovation systems.
This has been the highlight of the two countries’ participation at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Solly Malatsi, South African Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies (CDT), and William Gitau, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, led the two African countries’ delegations.
Phillip Tigo, Kenya’s Special Envoy on Technology, also attended.
“We also agreed to re-open our ICT MoU (information and communications technology memorandum of understanding) to reflect fast-evolving technologies and affirmed commitments to deeper collaboration on research, startups and secure infrastructure,” Tigo said.
The Kenyan delegation expressed support for South Africa’s WSIS+20 leadership and its candidacy for the African Telecommunications Union (ATU).
“In our bilateral meeting, we discussed finalising the Kenya–SA Digital MoU, collaboration on digital public identity, Kenya’s role in the G20 digital track and the AI Taskforce,” Gitau said.
To be held until Friday, the WSIS+20 is an existing multistakeholder United Nations (UN) process on digital governance and cooperation with a vision of fostering people-centered, inclusive, and development-oriented information and knowledge societies.
